Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure designed to restore the shape, size, and appearance of one or both breasts after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. This treatment is more than just a procedure—it’s a deeply personal journey to help restore what was lost and empower you to feel whole again. Whether you’re looking to recreate the natural appearance of your breasts after cancer surgery or restore symmetry following trauma or congenital conditions, breast reconstruction can offer physical, emotional, and aesthetic renewal. At Taylor Plastic Surgery, our skilled plastic surgeons work closely with each patient to develop a customized approach rooted in compassion, experience, and artistry.

Yes. Beginning January 1, 2026, health insurance plans in Arkansas will be required to provide comprehensive coverage for breast reconstruction procedures thanks to newly passed legislation. Under Act 424, which originated as SB83 during the 2025 legislative session, insurers must not only authorize reconstruction surgeries in advance but also adhere to minimum reimbursement standards for providers. The bill was officially signed into law on April 3, 2025 and represents a major step forward in ensuring access to reconstructive care for patients throughout the state.
This landmark legislation was not only a legal victory but also a deeply personal one for many within the breast reconstruction community—including our own team. Dr. Robert Taylor and our manager, Jennifer Moore, played an instrumental role in the campaign to get this bill passed. Their advocacy and unwavering dedication helped spotlight the critical gaps in insurance coverage. Thanks in part to their unwavering efforts, this bill’s language works to close those loopholes and help more women gain access to advanced breast reconstruction procedures. With Dr. Taylor’s medical expertise and the firsthand experience he and Jennifer share from working closely with patients, they played a key role in advocating for equitable access to care.
Dr. Taylor and Jennifer’s leadership and support of the bill is a testament to our collective efforts to create meaningful change in health care access. Their contributions—alongside the work of patient advocates, legislators, and national organizations like the American Society of Plastic Surgeons—have helped secure long-overdue protections for women in Arkansas seeking breast reconstruction.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction can provide a restored sense of well-being and wholeness. This treatment is capable of:
Improving confidence in your appearance
Improving breast symmetry
Helping you feel more comfortable in low-cut necklines or swimwear
Supporting emotional healing after cancer treatment or trauma
Making clothing and bras fit more comfortably
What Are Some of the Breast Reconstruction Options?
Breast reconstruction is not one-size-fits-all. At Taylor Plastic Surgery, we offer several techniques tailored to your individual needs, preferences, and treatment history.
Implant Reconstruction
If the patient chooses to receive breast implants, a breast tissue expander will be placed beneath the chest muscle to form an envelope designed to accommodate breast implants. Then, the expander will be removed and replaced with the implants. This approach can often provide a very natural shape. Saline or silicone gel implants are available, and our surgeon will help determine the most appropriate type for each patient’s body and goals.
Flap Reconstruction
Flap reconstruction uses tissues, fat, and muscle taken from another area of the body, such as the back, abdomen, or buttocks, to create a new breast mound. Known as autologous reconstruction, this technique’s use of the patient’s own tissue can produce a more natural look and feel to the reconstructed breasts. Common flap procedures include DIEP, TRAM, and latissimus dorsi flaps. These methods can often achieve excellent symmetry and long-lasting results.
DIEP Flap Reconstruction
Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap reconstruction, commonly referred to as DIEP flap breast reconstruction, takes skin and fat from the lower abdomen in a procedure similar to a tummy tuck, then creates a new breast without removing any muscle. This advanced microsurgical technique can be particularly beneficial for some patients, helping to preserve abdominal strength and function while offering a soft, natural breast appearance. DIEP flap reconstruction is often ideal for patients who have sufficient abdominal tissue and want to avoid implants.
Dr. Taylor will discuss your options based on the precise characteristics of your breasts and your aesthetic goals.
What Does the Breast Reconstruction Procedure Involve?
Your breast reconstruction surgery can be performed in our fully accredited, state-of-the-art, on-site surgical center. In some cases, reconstruction may begin at the time of mastectomy (immediate reconstruction), while others may wait until after completing treatment (delayed reconstruction). Dr. Taylor will help guide this decision based on your health and preferences. Once you and Dr. Taylor have determined the type of breast reconstruction that is best for you, he will explain what you can expect on the day of surgery and provide more details about how you can best prepare for the operation.
What Can I Expect During Breast Reconstruction Recovery?
Recovery from breast reconstruction depends on the type of procedure performed. Most patients can expect:
A hospital stay of 1–2 nights (for flap procedures) or same-day discharge (for implant reconstruction)
Mild to moderate soreness, swelling, and bruising during the first few days
Time off work typically ranges from 2–4 weeks
Light activity can usually resume after 1–2 weeks, while strenuous activities should be avoided for a minimum of 4–6 weeks
Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions and support throughout your recovery.
How Long Will Breast Reconstruction Results Last?
Breast reconstruction results are typically long-lasting. In the case that a breast implant ruptures, additional surgery may be required to revise the area. Patients should also understand that breast reconstruction will not combat the effects of aging, and gravity may affect the size and shape of the breasts over time. Regular follow-up appointments are important to ensure long-term satisfaction and health.
How Much Does Breast Reconstruction Cost?
The cost of breast reconstruction can vary widely depending on the technique used, the number of stages involved, and insurance coverage. At Taylor Plastic Surgery, we are committed to price transparency and helping you understand your financial options. A detailed quote will be provided during your consultation, and our team is available to assist with questions you may have about third-party financing arrangements that can help qualified applicants off-set any costs that may not be covered by insurance.
